The Asiatic Society of Mumbai, for some part of its history, was affiliated to the Royal Asiatic Society. This material dates from that time and is:

  • "Four Important Reprints on South East Asia" from Kraus Reprint, Liechtenstein. An advertising pamphlet for reprints of Asian material including for the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Bombay Branch, for 1841-1923. Printed, dated 1969.
  • Letter from the Librarian, Asiatic Society of Bombay, to the Royal Asiatic Society to thank them for the gift of the publication, "The Royal Asiatic Society - Its History and Treasures". Typed, dated 20 November 1980.

Madras Literary Society

The Madras Literary Society became allied to the Royal Asiatic Society in 1830. This material was gathered from the interaction between the two societies. These are:

  • "Translations of the Three Inscriptions/ old Telugu Character/ on the Five Copper Plates presented to the Madras Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society 30th January, 1831".
  • Translations of the inscriptions with explanatory notes, handwritten, 1 piece, 4 sides.

  • Note from R. Loewe, University College, London, concerning a paper that he had thought was about the Madras Literary Society. Handwritten, dated 5 April.
  • Letter from Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to he Honorary Secretary, Madras Literary Society, to ask, on behalf of the Council, for the Madras Literary Society to send an account of their activities for the Council to assess if the link between the two societies can be resuscitated. The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka was incorporated soon after its foundation as an affiliated society to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This material covers some of the interaction between the two societies. These are:

Gunasekara, Honorary Joint Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society (Sri Lanka Branch), to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to ask for a copy of the letter of incorporation of the Ceylon Branch. With this is a copy of the reply to state that no letter is in existence and also the Minutes books are temporarily in store while the Society's buildings are being renovated.   • Letters expressing concern regarding the possible new incorporation of the Royal Asiatic Society (Sri Lanka Branch) with the Royal Asiatic Society from H. W. Weeraratne, dated 16 November 1985; Harold Weevaratne, dated 21 November 1985; and H.W. Weeraratne, dated 9 December 1985.
  • Letter from the Honorary President, Royal Asiatic Society Sri Lanka Branch, to the Honorary Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that the incorporation will entail the name of the Society becoming the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka. Typed, dated 22 January 1986.

  • Correspondence between Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, and Dr Somapala Jayawardhana, Honorary Joint Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, concerning copies of the Journal of Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka for the Royal Asiatic Society's Collections. Nine letters, typed, dated from 18 May 1992 - 7 September 1993. Also 4 postcards of receipt.
  • Correspondence between Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, and B.E. Wijesuriya, Administrative Assistant for the Honorary Treasurer, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, concerning obtaining copies of the Sesquicentennial Commemorative Volume of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka. Two letters, typed, dated 25 April - 30 May 1995. With these letters is a printed pamphlet advertising the Commemorative Volume.
  • Letter from Michael Pollock, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to G.P.S.H. de Silva, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, to inform of the death of Professor Charles Fraser Beckingham, who was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka. Typed, dated 12 November 1998.
  • Correspondence concerning the visit of Mr R. Wijedasa of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka to the Royal Asiatic Society. Four letters, typed, dated 18 May 2003 - 30 July 2003.

Established as the Shanghai Literary and Scientific Society, in 1857, the Society became affiliated to the Royal Asiatic Society the following year, becoming the Royal Asiatic Society (North China Branch). This material was collated in the interaction of the two Societies; the closure of the North China Branch and subsequent questions regarding it closure; and in its reopening and re-establishing links with the Royal Asiatic Society.

These Papers consist of a single document - a handwritten manuscript with label, 'Notes on China and the Chinese'. This label also reads 'Read 7th April 1847. This is inaccurate - the General Meeting Minutes of the Society record that Sir George Staunton read the paper from the Reverend George Smith at the meeting of the 17th April 1847. The manuscript relates details of geography, politics, education, religion and culture. The manuscript is dated London, April 7th 1847 in the same hand as the creator and 'Read 17 April 1847' in a different hand.

Papers of Gerald Tibbetts

The Papers include publications written or collected by Gerald Tibbetts in connection with his research interests in early Arab navigation in the Indian Ocean. Related to this are draft copies of a lecture given by Tibbetts at the Royal Asiatic Society concerning the origins of navigation in the Indian Ocean.

There is also material collected by Tibbetts relating to his work on the Sindbad Voyage project (1980-1981) and his invitation to participate in the Heritage of Oman Festival.

The Papers of Hartwig Hirschfeld consists of the handwritten manuscript draft for his New Researches into the Composition and Exegesis of the Koran along with some supplementary notes in English and Arabic. The manuscript bears the stamp of the Bombay's Education Society's Press, Bycella, and is dated "Received 7 Mar 1902". The book was published by the Royal Asiatic Society, as Volume III of their Asiatic Monograph Series, in 1902.

With the manuscript draft and notes is a letter from Raphael Loewe to Mrs M. Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank her for agreeing to take the manuscript. He is working through Hirschfeld's papers (his great-uncle) and also enquires whether the Society would be interested in transcripts of Arabic manuscripts. This letter is typed and dated 17 May 1962.
