Papers of T.W. Rhys Davids

The papers of Professor T.W. Rhys Davids consist of two certificates. These are:

  • Certificate of Thanks for 18 years service as Secretary of Royal Asiatic Society. This is undated but Rhys Davids completed his 18 years, serving as both Secretary and Librarian, in 1905. The certificate is signed by Lord Reay and has the names of the Society's Members below.
  • Certificate for Philosophy Doctorate at the University of Wratislaviensis (Breslau) with attached seal, signed by Richard Roepell, 1882. With the certificate are 4 additional paper copies.

Papers of Raymond Head

These Papers were all produced in the compiling of the A Catalogue of the Paintings and Drawings in the Royal Asiatic Society, London. which was published by the Royal Asiatic Society in 1991. The material includes a manuscript proof, correspondence connected to the artworks of the Society, correspondence and lists for compiling the index, and notes and articles which Head collected and collated during his research.

These papers consist of a typed list of Reginald Le May's publications from 1926-1962, including some unpublished works at the time, and a small amount of biographical material. The list is headed with the handwritten annotation "With the compliments of Mr Reginald le May Feb. 1962".

Papers of Ram Raz

The Papers of Ram Raz contain an incomplete draft of his Essay on the Architecture of the Hindus with an associated letter from H.H. Wilson to Captain Harkness, Royal Asiatic Society. The papers also contain a 'Translation of a Hukamnamah or a Code of Rules enacted by the late Tippoo Sultan, the Sovereign of Mysore for the conduct of his Amilders'.

The Papers of Reginald Stanley Underhill consist of:

  • Photocopy of a letter from Chandra Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, 5th Prime Minister of Nepal, to Mrs Underhill to thank her for letting him know she enjoyed the [Fulpati] procession. He iterates that she has no need to apologise. Handwritten with printed letterhead, dated 9 October 1921.
  • Photocopy of envelope and Christmas greetings to Reginald Stanley Underhill from Maharaja Mohun Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana, 6th Prime Minister of Nepal. Postmarked 1963.
  • Photocopy of letter from Maharaja Mohun Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana to Peter Coombs, nephew of Reginald Stanley Underhill, to express his regrets on hearing of the death of Underhill. Typed, dated 28 November 1964.
  • "The Nepalese Ropeway" presenting a short biography of Underhill's life. Typed with handwritten corrections, unsigned and undated. The biography references some photographs but these are not with the documents.

The main item in these papers is the Letter Book, complied by Richard Macan concerned with the sale of the estate of the late Major Turner Macan. There is also a note written by Richard Macan and some modern research notes on the Letter Book and Turner Macan's biography.

An Eastern Odyssey

Programme of the Gala Performance of the film 'An Eastern Odyssey' held in the presence of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in aid of the Royal National Life-boat Institution (RNLI) at the Plaza Theatre, London, on 13 November 1934. This is a printed programme with a message from the Prince, information concerning the Citroën Trans-Asiatic Expedition and details of the film, An Eastern Odyssey, made as a record of the expedition. The final page of the programme lists Patrons of the RNLI and the Committee of the Gala performance.

With the programme is a ticket for the Royal Circle, Seat C9, at the Plaza Theatre and a card giving notification of the dress code for the evening.

A copy of the "Order of the Coronation of His Highness Sir Hisamud-din Alam Shah, K.C.M.G., Sultan of Selangor'. The printed pamphlet gives details of the order of events from 25-28 January 1939 with a full description of the Order of the Ceremony of the Crowning. Written in English and Malay in Arabic script.

With the programme is a letter from W.O. Skeat to Sir Richard Winstedt, dated 5 October 1954, in which he writes that Dr. Laidlaw found it difficult to decide whether to give the programme to the Royal Asiatic Society or the British Museum. Skeat was asked his preference and he favoured the Royal Asiatic Society, so it was therefore to be considered the Society's possession.

Bajān Tadjalli

A typed manuscript entitled "Bajān Tadjalli: uitgegeven door P. Voorhoeve" discussing the Arabic-Malay manuscript titled "Uiteenzetting der Openbaring" (Exposition of Revelation). It is unclear whether this is Petrus Voorhoeve's own document concerning his publication Bajān Tadjalli, an earlier study of the manuscripts or an article reflecting on Voorhoeve's work. There are eight typed sheets of the article and a further two sheets of footnotes with some handwritten annotations.
