In 1998, the Royal Asiatic Society celebrated its 175th anniversary with an exhibition, "Persian and Indian Manuscripts and Paintings from the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society" at the British Museum, and a lecture, "The Book of Kings: The Juki Shahnama of the Royal Asiatic Society" by Dr Barbara Brend, held at the British Library. This material covers the planning, publicity and attendance at these events. Also in conjunction with the exhibition, the publication Persian Paintings in the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society by B.W. Robinson was published.

The Royal Asiatic Society put on an exhibition, "Persian and Indian Manuscripts and Paintings from the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society", hosted by the British Museum. This material covers the organisation, publicity, correspondence and speech by the President connected with the Exhibition. In conjunction with the exhibition, the publication Persian Paintings in the Collection of the Royal Asiatic Society by B.W. Robinson was published. • Letter from Professor Francis Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Lieutenant Commander Lavery, St. James's Palace, to request the presence of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales at the reception to mark the Royal Asiatic Society's 175th Anniversary, dated 25 November 1997.
• Letter from Lieutenant Commander Lavery, St. James's Palace, to Professor Francis Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that the Prince of Wales will be unable to attend the reception, dated 26 November 1997.

In 1923 the Royal Asiatic Society celebrated its Centenary. This archival material contains a scrapbook with Centenary correspondence and invitations, further congratulatory correspondence, material concerning the Centenary Events, and correspondence concerning the publication of a Centenary Volume.

"News Cuttings", This is a hardbound scrapbook into which have been pasted commemorative items regarding the celebration of the Royal Asiatic Society's Centenary in 1923.

Letter from the Comptroller to the Prince of Wales, St James's Palace, to thank the Royal Asiatic Society for the copy of the Centenary Volume of the Society.

The patronage material includes original Charters and royal letters, and institutional correspondence concerning the Patronage of the Society.

Letter from Godfrey Thomas, Private Secretary, to Lord Reay, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII) would be unable to attend a dinner at the Society prior to him leaving for India. Typed with St James's Palace letterhead, dated 15 July 1921.

Researchers should look at the Minutes of the Council Meeting for this time period for further patronage information.

The material covers correspondence, administrative documents and photographs concerning both the Vice-Patronage and his Patronage of the Royal Asiatic Society whilst the Prince of Wales.

Correspondence concerning Prince Charles becoming the Patron of the Society. These are:

• Letter from Lydia Collins, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Simon Gimson, Buckingham Palace, to acknowledge the letter telling of the Queen's resignation as Patron and asking that the Prince of Wales take up the Patronage. Typed letter with printed letterhead, dated 20 February 1997.
• Letter from Simon Gimson, Buckingham Palace, to Lydia Collins, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that he will ensure the Queen sees the Society's letter and that she should write to Stephen Lamport, the Prince of Wales's Private Secretary, concerning the Prince's Patronage. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 21 February 1997.
• Letter from Lydia Collins, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Stephen Lamport, St James's Palace, to ask whether the Prince of Wales would become the Patron of the Society. Typed letter with printed letterhead, dated 27 February 1997.
• Letter from Stephen Lamport, St James's Palace, to Lydia Collins, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that the Society's request for the Prince to become Patron will be considered at a meeting in a few weeks time. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 4 March 1997.
• Letter from Stephen Lamport, St James's Palace, to Lydia Collins, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that the Prince has agreed to take on the Patronage of the Royal Asiatic Society, initially for a five year term from 2000 to January 2005. Typed letter with printed letterhead, dated 15 July 1997.
• Letter from Francis Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Stephen Lamport, St James's Palace, to express the Society's pleasure that the Prince has agreed to become the Patron. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 25 July 1997.
