Three copy letters to Christopher Gimson, Political Agent in Manipur, forwarded to William Pettigrew:

• Letter from the Honorary Assistant Director of Historical and Antiquarian Studies, Assam, Gauhati, stating that a grant has been budgeted for the work on the monograph on Archaic Meithi and that government's sanction has been obtained, dated 10 June 1933
• Letter from the General Secretary, Asiatic Society of Bengal, to enquire the present position of the monograph and to communicate the Society's position to offer a substantial financial assistance, dated 10 December 1930
• Letter from the General Secretary, Asiatic Society of Bengal, reporting on the society's decision regarding the publication of a monograph on Archaic Meitei by William Pettigrew, dated 10 December 1930

This sub-series contains correspondence between William Pettigrew and other individuals regarding Yumjao Singh's monograph on archaic Manipuri. The book was initiated by Pettigrew during his time in Manipur. After Pettigrew left Manipur for England in 1933, the work was continued by Yumjao Singh who had collaborated with Pettigrew on researching archaic Manipuri, with support from Christopher Gimson. Pettigrew agreed to offer criticism and suggestions to the book.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to Colonel Hoysted to explain the material he has sent to the Society. He asks whether the work is worth publishing and, if yes, if the Society would want it published along with the Introduction, Grammar and Vocabulary, and what the cost of publication will be. Typed, dated 15 July 1939.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to Dr Werelius asking for help to get hold of Pettigrew's papers for the monograph on Archaic Meitei. He writes that Pettigrew's principal assistant in the work, Yumjao Singh, has said that he can finish it off for publication if Pettigrew is not coming back [to Manipur]. Handwritten, dated 18 May 1934.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to RAS Secretary, declining to review ‘A Short History of Manipuri’, feeling that he is ‘too ignorant of most of the subjects discussed in it’. He encloses some comments he made on the book which may indicate how help could be given to emerging Manipuri scholars (not with the letter).

Letter from Christopher Gimson to RAS Secretary to say that he will ask the author of the old Manipuri monograph whether he would send the manuscript. He further writes that the Darbar [of the state of Manipur] had a fund for historical and archaeological research which may fund the publication, but otherwise he is willing to make a personal contribution towards the publication. Year unspecified but likely dated to 1950.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to RAS Secretary to enquire whether the Society will be interested in picking up the publication of Yimjao Singh’s book on the old Manipuri language again. He writes that attempts to publish the book in India have not been successful, and that G. H. Luce, late of Rangoon University, may be interested in this project.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to William Pettigrew, to say that he is sorry to hear that Pettigrew is not returning to Manipuri. He hopes to receive the monograph manuscript with Pettigrew's instructions as to how it should be dealt with. Handwritten, dated 14 November 1934.
