Note to say that the Letters and documents of Capt. James Purefoy were presented by C. Duggan which includes about the article in which Duggan wrote about the letters. Handwritten with Printed letterhead for Royal Asiatic Society, 1 piece, dated 9 September 1957. There is also a further note on this paper "2 Bills of Exchange and seven letters in the packet 1968".

Letter from James Purefoy to Thomas Purefoy in which he details his travels aboard the William Petrie sailing from Mumbai to France with a cargo of naval stores. He writes after putting into harbour at St Louis. He expects to return to Kolkata in a few days. He informs Thomas that he has settled his affairs with his friend and agent, John Leckie ,who will remit to Thomas all the property belonging to James in the event of his death. This should be divided equally between Thomas, their sister Jane (Mrs Eyre), Rachael and Tammy.

This material contains a letter from major Cunningham describing the "Haram of Ali Raza" at Mashhad and a copy of the "Ziarat Nameh" said at the shrine. There is also further Royal Asiatic Society correspondence concerning what to do with this donated material.

A letter from Major J.R Cunningham, at Jubbulpore, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to describe his visit to the "Haram of Ali Raza, the 7th Imam at Mashed" and to provide a copy of the "Ziarat Nameh" recited by the pilgrims. He and his wife had visited the Haram in April of that year. The letter is typed with embossed letterhead for Government of India, 2 sides. With the letter is a handwritten copy of the Ziyārat-nāmah, 5 pieces. The tomb at Mashhad is actually the Imam Reza Shrine of the 8th Imam.

Letter from Mr Oldham to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society, to state that he will be unable to be in London on 4 December and to send his regret to Sir Edward (Maclagan). He continues about the Cunningham papers suggesting the Hoysted contacts Dr Arberry for his opinion as he believes a description of the Haram has already been published.

Copy of a letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society, to Dr. Arberry to ask his advice concerning the Cunningham papers. He asks whether they are suitable for publication in the Society's Journal, though Major Cunningham has not requested it.

Letter from Dr Arthur John Arberry to Col. Hoysted in which he agrees with Mr Oldham that the Haram of Ali Riza has been described elsewhere. He writes that the copy of the "Ziyārat-nāmah" was not a very accurate one and had already been published in Iran. He suggests, "that Major Cunningham be thanked for his kindness in transmitting the copy of the pamphlet which will be placed in the Society's Library".

Letter from Professor R.A. Nicholson to Col. Hoysted in which he agrees with Dr Arberry that the prayers have already been published. He does not think it advisable that they are printed in the Journal.
