Copy of a letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary of Royal Asiatic Society, to Major J.R. Cunningham to thank him for the material, on behalf of the Council. He first apologises for the delay in responding because, "The offices have been closed for the Christmas Holidays, and have been rather deranged by A.R.P. measures and the necessity of sending our treasures away to a place of safety". He states the material, "will be placed, with great pleasure, in the Society's Library, where it will be of value to students, who will be interested in the great changes you have reported upon".

In 1934 the Asiatic Society of Bengal celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its Foundation. The material connected to this celebration is:

Harley and Babu Ganapati Sircar to ask if they would be willing to represent the Royal Asiatic Society at the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, Typed with handwritten annotations, dated 10 November 1933.

• Letter from G.A. Stewart, Assistant Secretary, Royal Society of Edinburgh, to the Assistant Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that they had been invited to send a delegate to the 150th Anniversary celebrations of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, and to ask the Royal Asiatic Society the form of congratulatory addresses. Typed, dated 10 November 1933.

• Letter from Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to the Assistant Secretary, Royal Society of Edinburgh, to inform that the Society had decided to ask two Oriental scholars to represent the Society. Typed, dated 16 November 1933.

• Letter from Babu Ganapati Sircar to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that he hopes to be able to represent the Society at the 150th Anniversary celebrations. Handwritten, dated 5 December 1933.

• Letter from Professor A.H. Harley to Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that he will be happy to represent the Royal Asiatic Society. Handwritten, dated 7 December 1933.

• Letter from Colonel Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Professor A.H. Harley to inform him of the Council's gratification that he can represent the Society and to enclose the Presentation Form. Typed dated 28 December 1933.

This item consists of four sheets of rubbings, each featuring Buddhist verses written in Chinese and Siddham characters, including such as the Breaking Hell mantra and the Nectar mantra. Based on the Chinese text, the inscription appears to be located in Tiankai Temple (天開寺), a Buddhist temple in Beijing, China and date to AD 1106 (the sixth year of the Liao dynasty).

An accompanying note identifies the item as ‘inscriptions at a temple 5 miles N. E. of Peking. A Dharani’ and records it as a donation by William W. Rockhill on 28 November 1893.

Each sheet measures approximately 33cm (w) x 90cm (h).

This consists of one large sheet formed by pasting together eight smaller sheets, measuring approximately 82cm (w) × 368cm (h) in total. The rubbing contains Chinese writing on the right and Tibetan writing on the left. The Chinese characters are only faintly legible, and the Tibetan are mostly illegible, but the piece is presumably a reproduction of the Sino–Tibetan Empire Treaty Inscription on the stone pillar erected in Lhasa in AD 823. The rubbing includes the main inscription of the treaty from one of the four sides of the pillar.

A note written on the accompanying wrapping paper reads: 'Rubbing of the Tibetan Chinese Inscription at Lhasa. Presented by W. W. Rockhill 26 Nov. 1893. See JRAS XII n.s. 516–518, 534.'

A letter from Major J.R Cunningham, at Jubbulpore, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to describe his visit to the "Haram of Ali Raza, the 7th Imam at Mashed" and to provide a copy of the "Ziarat Nameh" recited by the pilgrims. He and his wife had visited the Haram in April of that year. The letter is typed with embossed letterhead for Government of India, 2 sides. With the letter is a handwritten copy of the Ziyārat-nāmah, 5 pieces. The tomb at Mashhad is actually the Imam Reza Shrine of the 8th Imam.
