As part of the Quaritch Wales bequest several items of furniture were donated for use of the Royal Asiatic Society. Originally there were 6 items of furniture with the addition of a small Thai manuscript chest (see lists in QW/14/5). Of these three items have subsequently been sold when the Society moved premises. The remaining ones are listed within this series.

Thai Manuscript Chest

Small Thai Manuscript chest decorated in a black and gold design. There are three painted panels in the front, three at the back and one one either side. The base consists of two platforms which are decorated with floral motifs and geometrical patterns. The front panels show an ox drinking water from a lake on the lateral panels and a tiger on the middle panel. On one side there are two monkeys interacting with each other; the other side has a similar scene but with an additional hare looking at the monkeys. One back panel shows two humans talking to each other with one crouching and the other hanging off a cliff, the middle panel has a tiger attacking a crane-like bird and the third panel has two birds with human heads. All the panels have floral backgrounds. The top section has motifs too but the lid has no decoration on it. The chest is 82cm x 29cm at its base with a height of 34cm. It is unknown when this chest came into the possession of Quaritch Wales.

The chest is currently housed in the Reading Room.

Mahogany Secrètaire Bookcase

A George III mahogany secrètaire bookcase circa 1800, with dentilled cornice above a pair of arched astragal doors enclosing adjustable shelves. The lower section has a writing drawer enclosing pigeon holes and small drawers, which sits above a cupboard with pairs of doors, on a plinth base. The cupboard is 244cm high by 152cm wide. It is not known when this bookcase came into the possession of Quaritch Wales.
The bookcase is housed in the Society's Lecture Theatre.

Mahogany Corner Armchair

A George III mahogany corner armchair circa 1770, which has a broad rail back above two pierced vase shape splats, and a drop in seat on turned legs. It is not known when this chair came into the possession of Quaritch Wales.
The chair is housed in the Reading Room.

Regency Drum Top Table

A Regency drum top table circa 1820, the circular top has a moulded edge above alternating real and dummy cockbeaded drawers. It stands on ring turned and quadrangle reeded splayed legs. It is 74cm high with diameter of 120cm. It is not known how the table came into the possession of Quaritch Wales.
The table is housed in the Society's Council Room.

Mythic Society

Correspondence from the interaction of the Mythic Society, based in Bangalore, and the Royal Asiatic Society. These are:

  • Invitation from the President and Council of the Mythic Society, Bangalore, to attend the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of the Society on 27 November 1934. With the invitation is a Programme of Events. Both printed.
  • Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to the General Secretary, Mythic Society, to send the Society's thanks for the invitation to the Silver Jubilee celebrations, to send congratulations, and their regrets that the invitation arrived too late for them to send a representative. Typed, dated 11 December 1934.
  • Letter from the Manager, Mythic Society, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to provide a sketch of the activities of the Mythic Society. Typed, dated 31 March 1989.
