He gives a positive opinion of the content of the pamphlet and sends congratulations to Hodgson for his high scholarly achievements and recognition. He writes of his grief for the untimely death of their friend Burnell, about the selling of the greater part of Dr. Rost's library and his appreciation of Burnouf's immortal work. Letter from Samuel Beal to Brian Houghton Hodgson to thank him for the pamphlet about Hodgson's service. Beal had hoped that he might have gained a position at Cambridge University as Professor of Buddhist Chinese but there seems insufficient interest. Beal agrees that Bunyiu Nanjio is the only person really working in the field but Beal feels that he only views it from his national standpoint. Handwritten, 4 sides, 5 July 1883.

Letter from Léon Feer, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, to Brian Houghton Hodgson to acknowledge the sending of copies of the pamphlet containing a detailed account of Hodgson's official and other services. He praises Hodgson's contributions in the field of scientific knowledge; and gives information about the deposit of the pamphlet in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Buddhist manuscripts sent earlier by Hodgson, now in the library of the Société Asiatique, Paris.
