This fonds contains the personal papers of William Pettigrew, including research notes connected with the Manipuri language and other local dialects, examination papers, as well as correspondence primarily relating to a monograph on archaic Manipuri on which he collaborated with Yumjao Singh.

This sub-series contains correspondence between William Pettigrew and other individuals regarding Yumjao Singh's monograph on archaic Manipuri. The book was initiated by Pettigrew during his time in Manipur. After Pettigrew left Manipur for England in 1933, the work was continued by Yumjao Singh who had collaborated with Pettigrew on researching archaic Manipuri, with support from Christopher Gimson. Pettigrew agreed to offer criticism and suggestions to the book.

Letter from William Pettigrew to Christopher Gimson to say that he is looking forward to carry on the work in collaboration with Yumjao Singh. He asks if it is possible to send material to him in London for editing and printing. He further writes that the manuscript is now in New York but will be forwarded to London early next month. Typed, dated 6 February 1935.

Letter from Christopher Gimson to William Pettigrew to say that when the manuscript arrives Yumjao Singh would get on with the work and return the manuscript to Pettigrew for criticism and suggestions. He further writes of the situation in Manipur. Handwritten, dated 15 March [1935].
