Correspondence and official documentation concerned with International Congresses of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences and the association of the Royal Asiatic Society with the Congresses.

Correspondence concerning the Second Turkish Linguistic Congress held in Istanbul on 18th August 1934. These are:

• Letter from The Counsellor, Turkish Embassy, London, to the Royal Asiatic Society, to inform them of the enclosed communication received from the Secretary of the Society for the Investigation of the Turkish language. Typed, dated 26 July 1934. With this letter is the notification of the Second Linguistic Congress to be held in Istanbul under the aegis of the Gazi Mustafa Kemal, Founder and Protector of the Society for the Investigation of the Turkish Language, typed document.
• Letter from Col, Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Counsellor, Turkish Embassy, to thank for his letter, and to note that though the matters are of great interest to the Society, the deadline for applying for participation is already passed. Typed, dated 30 July 1934.
• Letter from Col Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Professor Margoliouth to state that he will send the information regarding the Congress to Mr Clauson, Sir Oliver Wardrop, Mr Guest and Mr Ellis. There is a further note to state that Margoliouth replied that he had no further remarks to make. Handwritten, dated 30 July 1934.
• Letter from The Counsellor, Turkish Embassy, London, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society to inform him that it would still be possible for Members to participate if they could inform him at the earliest possible convenience. Typed, dated 31 July 1934.
• Letter from Col Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Sir Oliver Wardrop to send the information regarding the Congress and ask him to send it on to Mr Clauson, Mr Ellis and Mr Guest. The letter has notes to state that it has been forwarded. Handwritten, dated 3 August 1934.
• Letter from R. Guest to Mr Ellis to forward the information as requested and to express his regret at not seeing Ellis at the British Museum. Typed, dated 6 August 1934.
• Letter from Dr Joseph de Somogyi to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank him for sending the communication concerning the Second Turkish Linguistic Congress and to return it for the Society's Papers. Handwritten, dated 23 October 1934.

Three items connected with the International Congress of Geography in Warsaw held on the 25-31 August 1934 under the auspices of the International Geographical Union. These are:

• First Circular for the International Congress with a letter from Stanislaw Pawlowski, General Secretary, and Eugenjusz Romer, inviting participants to the Congress. The circular also covers Terms of the Congress, the Themes of the Meetings, and Excursions. A handwritten annotation notes "Resolved on 12.10.33 not to nominate a representative".
• Bulletin D'Adhésion for the Congress for becoming a Member of the Congress, taking part in the discussion, and taking part in the excursions. Printed in French.
• Second Circular for the International Congress giving further information about the Congress, the subjects for discussion and the excursions.

Correspondence and printed material concerned with the "Conference on Official and Non-Official Co-operative Action as suggested by League of Nations Enquiry in the East". These are:

• Letter from the Joint Standing Committee, British Social Hygiene Council and Conference of British Missionaries, to the Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to enclose particulars of a preliminary conference to be held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on 25 July 1934. It is designed to bring before those organisations concerned with social work in the Far East, the problem of the traffic in women and their rehabilitation. It is suggested that the Royal Asiatic Society might wish to send a delegate to the conference. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 4 July 1934.
• "Conference on Official and Non-Official Co-operative Action". Printed leaflet concerning the conference stating its Objects, resolutions to be considered, the Agenda, and listing members of the Joint Standing Committee.
• Letter from Professor D.S. Margoliouth, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to state that a representative cannot be appointed by the Council since the Society's aims are not philanthropic. However the subject is of interest and therefore he suggests that Hoysted send a list of the addresses of the Council to the Committee so they can be contacted directly. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 7 July 1934. On the reverse he has added a handwritten note concerning exchange of Journals with Professor Braumlich of Leipzig.
• Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to the Joint Standing Committee, British Social Hygiene Council and Conference of British Missionaries, to send the Society's regrets that it will not be able to nominate a representative due to the end of the Session, but that he encloses a list of Members of the Society so they can be contacted directly. Typed, dated 9 July 1934.
• Letter from the Joint Standing Committee, British Social Hygiene Council and Conference of British Missionaries, to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank him for the list of addresses and to state that all members of the Council will receive a personal invitation. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 10 July 1934.

The fourth Anglo-American Conference of Historians was held at Senate House, the University of London, from 6-11 July 1936. These papers consist of correspondence and documentation in connection with this Conference. These are:

Letter from the Vice-Chancellor, University of London, Institute of Historical Research, to the President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform concerning the fourth Anglo-American Conference of Historians for the discussion of the problems of historical research which are of interest to the English-speaking world. He asks for the Royal Asiatic Society to send a representative. Typed letter with printed letterhead, dated 14 December 1935. With this letter is a printed Revised Provisional Programme for the Conference stating the Organising Committee, the Sections and the Time-Table for the Conference.

Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to H.L. Eason, University of London, to state that the Council had appointed Sir William Foster to be their delegate at the conference. Typed, dated 14 January 1936.

Letter from Margery Fletcher, Assistant-Secretary, Anglo-American Conference of Historians, to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank for the letter informing of the Society's delegate. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 15 January 1936.

Letter from Guy Parsloe, Secretary, Anglo-American Conference of Historians, to the President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that the letter saying delegate should have read representatives and asking whether the Royal Asiatic Society wished to nominate further representatives. Typed, with printed letterhead, dated 13 February 1936.

Letter from Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Guy Parsloe, Secretary, Anglo-American Conference of Historians, to state that Sir Richard Burn would also represent the Society. Typed, dated 13 March 1936.

Letter from Margery Fletcher, Assistant-Secretary, Anglo-American Conference of Historians, to Col. Hoysted, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to thank for the letter informing of the Society's further delegate. Typed with printed letterhead, dated 16 March 1936.

The Royal Asiatic Society bought 60 Queen's Gardens in 1988 and remained there until 2005. These papers include records concerning the purchase, upkeep, rental of rooms, and sale of property, and photographs.

The Royal Asiatic Society rented rooms at 73 Collier Street from 2005-2006 while alterations were made at the newly purchased 14 Stephenson Way property. Items from this rental are:

• Plan of the rooms to be rented, dated 24 June 2005.
• Letter from Mark Winkler, Beaumont & Co., to Alison Ohta, Royal Asiatic Society, to set out the proposed head of terms for occupation of the rooms at 73 Collier Street, dated 30 June 2005.
• Licence Agreement between Manchester Square Properties Ltd. and the Royal Asiatic Society regarding the rental of the rooms for the time period 14 July 2005-13 July 2006. Signed and dated 13 July 2005.
• Letter from Alison Ohta, Curator, Royal Asiatic Society, to The Manager, Lloyds TSB Bank, Baywater Branch, to agree payment to Manchester Square Properties Ltd., dated 13 July 2005.
• "List of Furniture to take to Collier Street" - inventory of furniture, undated.
• "Notification of Change of Address from Queen's Gardens to 73 Collier Street - 2 printed cards.

Material concerned with the interaction of the Société Asiatique and the Royal Asiatic Society.

The Society holds a Royal Charter. These documents concern changes within the Charter and also its Rules, Byelaws and Standing Orders.

The International Congress of Orientalists, initiated in Paris in 1873, was an international conference of Orientalists. It was later renamed as the International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa and then as the International Congress of Asian and North African Studies. This material covers the interaction of the Royal Asiatic Society with the Congress in the time period 1889 to 1993.
