A small amount of 19th century correspondence concerned with the Journal remains. These are:

• 'Some remarks on reading Lt. Col. Colebrooke's papers relating to Ceylon' - a critique of a paper submitted by Lt. Col. Colebrooke, unknown author, undated.
• Correspondence from J.W. Bosanquet to Edwin Norris concerning a paper he is submitting, two letters, dated 29 October 1858 and 2 November 1858. Also a letter from H.H. Wilson to Edwin Norris to state there would be no objection to Bosanquet's paper being included, dated 27 [August 1859]. The article was published in the Journal in 1860.
• Correspondence from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Edwin Norris and J.W. Redhouse concerning the publication of papers he had sent. Four Handwritten letters dated 18 January 1861, 19 January 1861, 16 February 1861 and 19 February 1861. Hodgson first deems the material not worth printing, then reconsiders and offers and sends £10 towards the cost. There is a further letter from R. Spence Hardy considering that the material may well be of interest if it does not overlap that of Gutzlaff's printed in 'Miscellaneous Translations from Oriental Languages'. Handwritten, dated 20 May 1861. The article appeared in JRAS 18 (1861), "Notice on Buddhist Symbols" pp.393-399.
• Correspondence from J.E. Hall to J.W. Redhouse concerning a paper he is writing on an inscription and how ill-health has slowed the process. Two letters, dated 18 July [1863] and 17 August 1863.
• Letter from Henry Cope, Secretary of the Agri-Horticultural Society of the Punjab, requesting a copy of the paper written by Professor Medlicott to be translated into the local languages, dated 22 January 1863.
• Letter from Professor P. Petersen to Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot responding to criticism of his article by Mr Fleet, dated 14 October 1892.

Hodgson used much of his time in both Nepal and Darjeeling in research, wanting to discover and understand about the architecture, languages, ethnography, religion, zoology and botany. He collected specimens and manuscripts, and had many drawings made, which he donated to many collections throughout Europe. He was also politically involved during his Residency in Nepal, and also later in England, when he continued to show an active interest in the Indian subcontinent, particularly regarding trade and vernacular education. These Personal Papers reflect these interests and are a record of much of his activity - Hodgson and his wives seemed to have a need to record all his successes. He was also a keen annotator of material, so that most of the printed material also bears his handwritten comments.

"Autograph Book belonging to Susan Hodgson, Alderley Grange, Wotton under Edge" A leather bound autograph book belonging to Hodgson's wife, Susan, in which are placed certificates, diplomas, academic and personal correspondence, newspaper cuttings and extracts related to Brian Houghton Hodgson's life. Leather binding with metal clasp. The book's binding is broken and some pages are loose. Care must be taken when using this item.

Certificate of leaving for Brian Houghton Hodgson from the East India College, Haileybury. Hodgson had attended the Public Examinations of May 1816 in which he gained a prize in Bengalese and Great Credit in other departments. In Examinations of December 1816 he again attained a prize in Bengalese, and Highly Distinguished in all other departments. In May 1917 he gained a prize in Classics, Political Economy and Bengalese and was Highly Distinguished in all others. In December 1817, he gained the Medal in Classics, a prize in Bengalese and Highly Distinguished in all others. The College therefore placed him in the First Class in Merit and assigned him the Rank of First on the list of students now leaving for the Presidency of Fort William. Summary by Brian Houghton Hodgson of Jung Bahadur's letter of VE 1912 Vaiśākah śudi 15 (CE April 1855), Hodgson's title description reads "Letter brought by Gajraj from Jung Feb 1855". Handwritten, 3 sides.

Draft of a letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Sir George MacGregor writing that he is pleased for the country's sake that Jung Bahadur's offer has been accepted. He writes of Jung Bahadur's high energy and talent, his knowledge of positions and his forthcomingness. He reminds MacGregor that Gorkhas eat in the early morning for the whole day so if he wants then to march at 7am, they must be roused at 4am. He advises MacGregor to be cheerful and kind and this will 'carry the Gorkhas'. Handwritten, 4 sides, dated 12 December 1857.

Letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Sir Robert Ferguson to thank him for the copy for the Report of the Committee of "H of C" (House of Commons) on Colonisation of India. Hodgson expresses his inability to add anything of value on the proposed issue of European colonization in India as he (Hodgson) had been out of touch for a long time with developments in this subject. He is transmitting to Sir Robert only the papers relating to his communication with Lord Canning and associated queries. Hodgson references Lord Canning's feeling on the subject as he was fully aware of the importance of the subject and was planning to send a letter to the government in England for their opinion and consent. Handwritten, 4 sides, dated 4 June 1858.

News cutting from the Athenaeum containing a list of volumes which Brian Houghton Hodgson had sent to the Vatican having been given them by the Grand Lama of Tibet. They had been confiscated from former Catholic missionaries. Printed material, 1 side, dated 5 January 1884.

Letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Archibald Campbell to return the second batch of [Papers]. He writes about Gridlestone and of difficulties in Nepal and that it is impossible to increase trade without acquaintance of the facts. Handwritten, one piece, 2 sides with a small rectangle cut from the paper, dated 30 May 1873.

This is a series of documents of correspondence and testimonials reflecting the activities of Brian Houghton Hodgson in the period 1836-1848. Hodgson and his wives were keen collectors of letters and statements that reflected well upon the work in which he was involved.
