In caring for the collections and making them accessible to researchers various lists and catalogues have been collated throughout the Society's history. Some of these have been published but many are unpublished or in draft form prior to publication. These have been kept as important sources of both information about the nature of the collections and also how the Society has historically organised them. Please note, however, that not all the items in the catalogues and lists are still within the Society's collections.

Historic catalogues and handlists created for the Society's books:

• 'Royal Asiatic Society: MSS. Catalogue of the Chinese Library 1881' - two large handwritten bound volumes with leather spines and gold titling on their front covers containing details of the Chinese books in the Royal Asiatic Society in 1881.

• 'Catalogue of the Chinese Library of the Royal Asiatic Society' - a hard cover notebook with title on the front board containing a list of the Chinese books in the Library under subject headings. This is undated. Please note the boards are loose from the notebook.

• 'Chinese books of which the Library of the R.A.S. has apparently more than one copy' - handwritten list, 4 sides, identifying duplicates. With this list is a second list, 2 sides of 'Chinese Books apparently not in the R.A.S. Library and in the University College Library in duplicate apparently'. Both are undated but the paper of the second list is watermarked for 1859.

• 'Catalogue of The Russian Books in the possession of The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland' - handwritten notebook without boards detailing Russian books, undated.

• Annotated Proofs for the 'Catalogue of Printed Books published before 1932 in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society'. The publication was printed in two volumes in 1940. The proofs are pasted into 6 large bound volumes and are extensively annotated.

• Photocopy of the Card Catalogue - a card catalogue was created for the Society's collection probably dating from post-1945. This is a series of photocopies of that catalogue created to form a back up and divided according to the drawers containing the cards. There are 17 archival folders. The copy for Drawer 6 FAA - GOS is absent.

• List of Complimentary Copies of Books & Magazine, published by the Burma Translation Society, Rangoon Burma' with annotated title, 'Accessions in Burmese 1954'. Typed list, 2 pieces, dated 1954.

• 'A Few Rare Books Found in this Library' - typed list of 68 books on 4 sheets of foolscap paper.

• 'List of Rare Books held in R.A.S. Old & New Strong Rooms (May 1969), computer printed with handwritten annotations, 28 pages held together with a red plastic spine. This list is located in the Reading Room Office.

• List of publications undertaken with the James G. Forlong Fund, Miscellaneous R.A.S. Publications, the Dr B.C. Law Trust Fund, Royal Asiatic Society Seminar Papers, The Oriental Translation Fund original and new series, the Prize Publication Fund, and the R.A.S. Monograph Fund, computer printed, 9 pages, c. 1999.

• 'Japanese Vernacular Language Books at the R.A.S.' created in 2000, with associated background information, computer printed, 14 pages. This list is located in the Reading Room Office.

• 'South Asia - Official Publications - Back Basement' - computer printed list, 2 pages, undated.

• 'List of Aurobindo Books' - computer printed, 8 pages, undated.

Electronic documents - all these were created into archival documents in April 2024. Their original creation date is noted in the list.

• 'THE SIR GEORGE THOMAS STAUNTON COLLECTION HELD IN THE R.A.S. LIBRARY - BOOKS (UP-DATED LIST AS AT THURSDAY 18TH MARCH 1999) - first created in 1998 and updated in 1999.
• 'Books on Central Asia in the RAS Library' - created 04/02/2003.
• 'Borneo Books' - created 12/04/2011.
• 'Contents of Items Located in Old Strong Room as of April 1998' - created 22/06/1998.
• 'Early Turkish Books' - created 06/09/2010.
• 'Preliminary Catalogue of Japanese Books catalogued by Peter Kornicki in October 2007, with notes by Akira Hirano, September 2007', document created 21/11/2007.
• 'Pre 1820 book's - created 13/05/201.
• 'Turkish Printed Books' - prepared by Evrim Bimbas with introductory email and report, document created 11/07/2011.

Lists concerned with pamphlets within the Society's collections:

• 'Sir Gerard Clauson's Collection of Offprints' - list of offprints given to the Society by Gerard Clauson. Typed, 3 pieces, [19702].
• 'Draft List of the Contents of most of the Bound Volumes of Pamphlets' - computer printed, 62 pages, undated. This list is located in the Reading Room Office.

Electronic documents - all these were created into archival documents in April 2024. Their original creation date is noted in the list.

• 'Miscellaneous Materials in the Royal Asiatic Society Library, London, A Working List' prepared by Yogesh Mishra, December 2007 - created 08/01/2008.

• 'Handlist of the Periodical Titles in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society', ring bound pamphlet created June 1997.
• 'List of Newspapers Held in the R.A.S. Library, May 1998', computer printed, 10 pages.
• 'List of Current Periodicals on the Reading Room Shelves, 13th October 1998', computer printed, 10 pages.
• 'R.A.S. Periodical Holdings: Brief Details June 1997, Part rev. July 2001', computer printed, 52 pages.

Catalogues covering multiple types of manuscripts. These are:

• ‘Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hindustani, Tibetan and Armenia Manuscript’. Several catalogues bound into one volume. These are:
  1. ‘A Descriptive Catalogue of the Historical Manuscripts in the Arabic and Persian Languages, preserved in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland’ by William H. Morley, dated 1854.
  2. ‘Catalogue of Arabic, Persian, Hindustani, and Turkish MSS in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society’ by O. Codrington, Honorary Librarian, dated 18 January 1892.
  3. ‘The Schrumpf Collection of Armenian Books’ by Professor Minas Tchéraz, dated October 1893.
  4. List of the Tibetan MSS and Printed Books in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society’ by H. Wenzel.
     These are all bound into one volume and have extensive annotations and some inserted material too. This volume is found in the Reading Room Office.
• ‘A Catalogue of South Indian Manuscripts (especially those of the Whish Collection) belonging to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland’ compiled by Dr M. Winternitz, Professor of the German University of Prague, with an appendix by F.W. Thomas, dated 1902; and ‘Catalogue of Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts in the possession of the Royal Asiatic Society (Hodgson Collection’ by Professors E.B. Cowell and J. Eggeling and ‘Catalogue of the Tod Collection of Indian Manuscripts in the Possession of the Royal Asiatic Society’ by L.D Barnett, dated 1940. Printed catalogues with handwritten annotations and notes inserted, 347 pages, Bound volume - title on cover reads 'R.A.S. Catalogues of Muhammadan and Tibetan Manuscripts, 1892'. This is located in the Reading Room Office.
• 'R.A.S. Catalogue of Collection of M.S.S. &c.' - handwritten lists of manuscripts divided according to the languages. Bound volume with black cover and some inserts. This volume is in a fragile condition.
• 'Oriental MSS in Glazed Case on Landing', listed according to shelf. Handwritten small notebook - cover and pages loose.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society - Oriental MSS not found in any printed catalogue or hand list 1956' - typed list with handwritten annotations, 2 pieces, foolscap.
• 'Oriental Manuscripts in the R.A.S.' - list of the quantities of each type of manuscript subdivided into type. One piece, photocopy of typed list.

• 'RAS Manuscripts lists and catalogues' - the document explains the different types of manuscripts held in the Collections and some of the lists and catalogues that have been created for them. The document was first created in 2014.

Catalogues and lists for manuscripts in Arabic script - Arabic, Persian, Hindustani and Turkish languages:

• ‘A Catalogue of the Manuscripts in the Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hindustani Languages preserved in the Libraries of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Oriental Translation Fund of Great Britain and Ireland, 1838’ by William H. Morley. A handwritten catalogue with further handwritten annotations and stamped with ‘William H. Morley, Middle Temple’. Bound volume but the front board and the introductory pages have come loose from the rest of the volume. Inserted are handwritten lists: ‘Morley Catalogue of MSS not yet found’, Nos. 1, 2 and 6. Five pages. The volume is located in the Reading Room Office.
• 'R.A.S. 21/12/1989 MSS with paintings from Morley's Catalogue 1854' - list of the Arabic script manuscripts which also contains paintings checked against the provisional handlist of March 1999. Two piece, one computer printed and one copy of handwritten.
• 'Provisional Draft Handlist of Royal Asiatic Society Manuscripts in Arabic Script' - list created by Julian Reade, Honorary Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society with an introduction dated 8 May 1996. This appears to be the earlier version of the below electronic document of the same title. One ring-bound booklet.

Electronic documents - archival copies were created in 2024:

• 'PROVISIONAL DRAFT HANDLIST OF ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY MANUSCRIPTS IN ARABIC SCRIPT (Updated March 1999 and box locations revised August 2013)'. This was first created by Julian Reade, Honorary Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society in 1996. It is based on the Morley Manuscript Catalogue amended by Codrington Catalogue (JRAS 1892:502-8) with further amendments by Julian Reade and Michael J. Pollock (Librarian). This document was first created in 2010.
• 'ARABIC MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS OF THE ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY' - list of the Arabic manuscripts in the collection, first created in 2009.
• 'CONCORDANCE of Manuscript Numbers for the Persian Collection' - numerical lists matching manuscripts from the catalogues created by Morley (manuscript and printed), Codrington and le Strange. This document was first created in 2002.

Catalogues and handlists for manuscripts in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. These are:

• A list of the Sanskrit manuscripts donated by James Tod provided in a letter by Professor Christian Lassen, 1 January 1827.
• ‘A Catalogue of South Indian Manuscripts (especially those of the Whish Collection) belonging to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland’ compiled by Dr M. Winternitz, Professor of the German University of Prague, with an appendix by F.W. Thomas, dated 1902. Also bound with this is ‘Catalogue of Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts in the possession of the Royal Asiatic Society (Hodgson Collection’ by Professors E.B. Cowell and J. • 'List of the Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts presented to the R.A.S. by Brian Hodgson'. - handwritten list, 1 piece.
• 'Whish MSS (not in printed catalogue)' - handwritten list of some of the South Indian manuscripts donated by Charles Whish, 2 pieces.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society - Tamil MSS' - typed list of the Tamil manuscripts, 2 pieces with a further giving details of Tamil manuscript 13A.
• 'Previously Unidentified Manuscripts - Rajasthani' - list of Rajasthani manuscripts within the collection created by Rima Hooja, Visiting Fellow, Royal Asiatic Society, in 2002. Computer printed, 20 pieces.

Electronic documents - archival versions were created in 2024.

• 'South Indian Sanskrit / Whish Manuscripts' - a document detailing the extent and background of these manuscripts in the collections, created by Kathy Lazenblatt, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, in 2017.
• 'Tod Manuscript Collection' - a detailed list of the manuscripts in the Society's Collections donated by James Tod, the Society's first Librarian. This was compiled by Rima Hooja in 2002.
• 'Handlist of Tamil Manuscripts in the Royal Asiatic Society' - based on a typescript list of c.1956, with amendments and additions. Re-typed March 2009. List of the Society's Tamil manuscripts.

Catalogues and handlists for manuscripts in Pali, Sinhalese and Burmese. These are:

• 'List of the Singhalese, Burmese and Pali manuscripts in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society (made by G. Rost in 1849)' - handwritten list of 31 manuscripts.
• 'Buddhist Manuscripts' - handwritten list subdivided into 'Burmese Character', and 'Sinhalese MSS in the library on Jan.1. 1889'. List on 10 sides, foolscap paper.
• 'A Catalogue of the Pali & Burmese manuscripts of the R.A.S. scientifically arranged' - handwritten list of the manuscripts on 4 sides - their arrangement is not explained.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society - Burmese MSS' - typed list of the Burmese manuscripts created in 1956. Four pieces.
• 'Singhalese MSS. Royal Asiatic Society Hand List 1956' - a photocopy of the original list with handwritten annotations detailing the form of the manuscript, 3 pieces.
• 'Morris Collection Bought 1896, Pali, Sinhalese and Burmese Mss, List copied from JRAS. 1896, pp. 212-214' photocopy of journal article list pasted on to foolscap paper with some handwritten annotations, 2 pieces.
• 'Survey of the Pali manuscript collection, Royal Asiatic Society' - a list of the Pali manuscripts created by Jacqueline Filliozat from 1993-1996, 39 pages.

Catalogues and handlists for manuscripts in Southeast Asian languages and scripts notably Thai, Javanese and Malay:

• 'List of Raffles; Javanese MSS. in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society, London' created by R.O. Winstedt and P. Voorhoeve in 1950 - handwritten list of the Javanese manuscripts donated to the Society by Sir Stamford Raffles, listing 48 manuscripts.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society: Raffles's Javanese MSS. Hand List 1956' - typed list with handwritten annotations, 4 pieces.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society: Siamese MSS. Hand List 1956' - typed list with handwritten annotations, 3 pieces.
• 'List of the Malay Manuscripts in the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society, London' compiled by P. Voorhoeve. Offprint from the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Parts 1&2, April 1963. Printed with handwritten annotations.
• List of manuscripts in Balinese, Madurese, Sundanese, Javanese and Old Javanese, 33 pieces, and further list of manuscripts in Malay and Mawken, 77 pieces, prepared by M.C. Ricklefs. With the lists is a letter from M.C. Ricklefs. Department of History, SOAS, to Simon Digby, Honorary Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society to send the list and to inform of his intention that they will become part of a union catalogue for such manuscripts in British libraries which he is compiling with P. Voorhoeve. The letter is dated 6 October 1972.
• 'Royal Asiatic Society, Thai Manuscripts' - computer printed list of the Thai manuscripts with accompanying copy of an email from Jana Igunma, British Library, to Kathy Lazenblatt, Librarian, Royal Asiatic Society, to send the list and comment on some manuscripts of special interest. 4 pieces in total, the email is dated 24 January 2014.

• 'Four Tibetan Mongolian Mss. given to the Royal Asiatic Society by the Rev'd Robert Yuille - as identified and numbered by Professor Charles Bawden in March 1978' - typed list of the manuscripts, 1 piece.
