Papers of John Drew Bate with some allied correspondence of his Daughter, E.E. Bate.

John Drew Bate was not only an active missionary, but also interested in the wider culture of India and, in particular, the Hindi language. These papers reflect his interests, comprising mainly of notes and manuscripts for sermons, articles and books. He is particularly known for authoring the Hindi Dictionary, first published in 1875 with a later edition in 1918. His handwritten notes for this dictionary are included in the papers, along with Manuscript notes for a book on Islamic Studies.

John Drew Bate was active in producing manuscripts about both religious and cultural matters. Some of the manuscripts in this collection reached publication, others are only in draft version. Many are handwritten with copious annotations showing something of Bate's working process.

John Drew Bate's first edition of his Hindi Dictionary was published in 1875, titled, A Dictionary of the Hindee Language. A second edition was published in 1918. This collection contains both handwritten manuscripts and annotated printed manuscripts either for production of the second edition or work towards a further unprinted edition.

The material also contains some correspondence to Miss E E Bate regarding the possibility of a third edition of the Dictionary post John Drew Bate's death.

The manuscript contains both Hindi to English and English to Hindi components, An archival note has been added at some point saying "Bate MSS Additions to his Hindi Dictionary, Deposited by Miss Bate 1929"

Within the MSS are some added notes on scraps of paper and a few pages of printed proofs

  • Letter from Civil Service Commission to Miss E E Bate, dated 14th November, 1929, regarding the mention of the Dictionary on the Indian Civil Service Examination Paper with attached paper.
  • Letter from The Incorporated Society of Authors, Playwrights & Composers to Miss E E Bate, dated 24th December, 1929, to give advice regarding the possibility of buying back the rights to the Dictionary.
  • Specimen Pages of the Suggested Enlargement of Bate's Hindi Dictionary from Miss E E Bate to The Indian Press, Allahabad, India, dated 31st December 1929.

Though only "An Examination of the Claims of Ishmael as Viewed by Muhammadans", the first chapter of the first section was published, John Drew Bate had envisaged and drafted a much larger work. The two handwritten drafts of John Drew Bate's work on Islamic Studies show the extent of his work.

Handwritten on lined, foolscap paper, this draft appears to be a neater version of the first. Has accompanying Royal Asiatic Society label "BATE, Islamic Studies. MSS - prepared for continuation Missionaries Vade Mecum"
