Letter from Joseph Hooker to Brian Houghton Hodgson in which he thanks Hodgson for his letters. They have been marched from [the Zeeta]. The Dewar is behaving "most extraordinarily and is greatly agitated". Hooker writes about their latest interview with the Dewar. Handwritten, 4 sides, with accompanying envelope, dated 21 December 1849.

This is a series of documents of correspondence and testimonials reflecting the activities of Brian Houghton Hodgson in the period 1836-1848. Hodgson and his wives were keen collectors of letters and statements that reflected well upon the work in which he was involved.

Extracts of Letters from Brian Houghton Hodgson to his father, Brian Hodgson, dated 28th June 1843 and 24th July 1843 in which he writes of his position in Nepal. In the letter of the 28 June, Hodgson suggests to his father that he will soon have to leave Nepal and hasten home. He suggests that "Lord E. with talent and industry to do great good, spoils all by his prejudices & by his precipitation & by his arrogance". Again Hodgson writes, "Lord E. wants to persuade himself & others that I am unpopular here: a monstrous delusion or fraud". On the reverse of this letter is a "Translation of a Kharitah from the Maha Rajah of Nepal to the R.H. Lord Ellenborough" which praises Hodgson's ability and expresses the Maha Rajah's concern about Hodgson's desire to return to England. The letter, dated 24 July 1843, in which he writes of a meeting with the Maha Rajah and their subsequent conversation regarding the Governor-General and the political situation. Further extracts relate the extent of Hodgson's support as shown by the number of Chiefs that had attended; and that he will be unable to leave Nepal before December due to the malaria. Copy of a letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to his father, Brian Hodgson, in which he writes that Mr Marshman has forwarded to his father various papers about the political situation in Nepal and Lord Ellenborough's intentions, and about Hodgson's conduct in the matter. Handwritten, 1 side, dated 30 September 1843.

Copy of a letter from Brian Houghton Hodgson to Sir Rutherford Alcock in which he talks of meeting Alcock at a mutual friend's, Dr Jackson, and their conversation on matters such as Nepal and Pekin. Hodgson would like to talk with Alcock cnocerning the Russia situation and writes when he will be available after his visit to Dr Hooker at Kew. Hodgson writes about the possibilities of trade between the Himalayan countries and China. Handwritten (not in Hodgson's hand), 8 sides, dated 10 March 1873.

Correspondence with Sir Louis Mallet (1823-1890) who was a British civil servant, an advocate of free trade and served on the Council of India. A set of 11 letters between Hodgson and Mallet concerning trade in India, dating to 1873.

Letter from Sir Louis Mallet to Brian Houghton Hodgson to return the Papers that Hodgson has lent him. Mallet thinks Hodgson has made a good case and hopes that he can persuade the Duke and Lord Northbrook. Mallet will take the opportunity of writing privately to Lord Northbrook.
