The Papers contain material related to some of Allen's Literary Activities and Publications.

This material is concerned with Allen's research into Evliya Çelebi, (1611?-1682?), the Ottoman explorer and the possibility of collaborating on translations of Celebi's work. It consists of correspondence and some manuscripts.

This subs-series consists of 17 letters concerned with Allen's work on Evliya Celebi.

Letter from W.E.D. Allen to Harold Bowen, Hakluyt Society. A project proposal addressed to Hakluyt Society and the Royal Asiatic Society regarding translating the works of Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi, total of 10 volumes, 8 of which are in Arabic and 2 in Ottoman Turkish. Includes information about the importance of Celebi's works as a social history of 17th century Ottoman Empire. Proposes budget for the project and requirements of translators, editors and annotators. Dated: 9 October 1954.

Letter from Richard Hill to Peter Skelton, Hakluyt Society in which Hill proposes a rough deadline for submitting his translation of Evliya Celebi's work on Egypt - volumes 9 and 10. Dated: 29 February 1956.

Letter from Richard Hill to W.E.D. Allen in which Hill discusses his experience with Evliya Celebi's writings as relating to his own work on Egypt, Sudan and Somalia. Expresses concerns over difficulties of finding accurate translations from Ottoman Turkish. Dated: 14 March 1956.

Letter from Richard Hill to W.E.D. Allen in which he responds to Allen's project proposal of the translation of Evliya and offers thoughts on funding. Dated: 8 April 1956.

Letter from Peter Skelton to W.E.D. Allen in which he writes of a forthcoming C.A.S. dinner and discusses Mango's translation of Russian Embassies. He suggests that Allen put forward a proposal for a second volume to the Council of the Hakluyt Society and that the switch to Cambridge University Press has much increased the sales of the Society. He is pleased with Allen's choice of collaborator for Evliya, thanks him for the Russian catalogue and his news on the Arabic globe in Naples. Dated: 19 June 1958.

Letter from W.E.D. Allen to Peter Skelton in which he writes about his concerns regarding the possibilities of UNESCO being involved with the publication of his project. He writes that he is hoping to meet Ménage before he goes to Turkey. Dated: 23 June 1958
