The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence between the Society and Johnson Reprint Corporation, New York, regarding granting the Corporation the exclusive rights to reprint unavailable early issues and volumes of JRAS. The agreement was later extended to cover publications of the Oriental Translation Fund series, as well as the warehousing and selling of JRAS and publications of the Society of Biblical Archaeology, and continued until the winding up of the Corporation in 1993 when all reprint rights were relinquished. Mixed with the correspondence are agreements signed in 1959, 1964 and 1966.
