Diana Crawford was appointed Secretary and Librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1963. She retired in 1977 and was elected a Fellow honoris causa of the Society in 1978.
Ulla Johansen was an Estonian-born German ethnologist. She was director of the ethnology department at the University of Cologne from 1973 to 1990.
Henry (Harry) Thomas Silcock was born in Bath in 1882. He was educated at Bath College, Fettes College (Edinburgh) and Oriel College (Oxford). He 1908 he travelled to China to work as a teacher with the Friends Foreign Mission Association. He married Margaret Standing in Chengtu in 1909 with whom he had five children. In 1911 he worked at the West China Union University, becoming Vice-President. He also became Secretary of the the Friends Foreign Mission Association in 1920, where he served until 1932, when he became Secretary of the Universities China Committee in London. It is during this time that he was also involved in the China Society. In 1938 he returned to China to both occupied Shanghai and "Free China", encouraging the formation of a Friends Centre in Shanghai in 1939. Through the 1940s he travelled extensively around the world for the Friends World Committee for Consultation. In 1947 he returned to Chengtu, China. Between 1950-1954 he continued to work for the Friends World Committee for Consultation. He was made an Honorary Member in 1961. Silcock died in 1969, aged 86.
David Haliburton (1774-c. 1833) of Muirhouselaw, Berwickshire, who in later life lived at Bushey Grove, Hertfordshire, was a distant cousin of Sir Walter Scott though his paternal grandmother. He served in the East India Company, as a member of the Board of Revenue and was responsible for exposing the corrupt practices of Edward and John Holland who both served as Governor of Madras. They used Avadhanum Paupiah to amass forged evidence against Haliburton which ended Haliburton's career in India. However, the scheme was uncovered by Lord Cornwallis, Governor-General of India, and Haliburton exonerated. Haliburton was a founder member of the Royal Asiatic Society. He never married and was the last of the line of Haliburtons written about by Walter Scott in his Memorials of The Haliburtons.
Sir Harry Smith Parkes was a British diplomat who served as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary and Consul General of the United Kingdom to the Empire of Japan from 1865 to 1883 and the Chinese Qing Empire from 1883 to 1885, and Minister to Korea in 1884. He was a Corresponding Member of the Society from 1854, and later a Non-Resident Member. He was also for some time the President of the Asiatic Society of Japan.
A biography of Sir Harry Smith Parkes was included in the proceedings of the Anniversary General Meeting on 18 May 1855, published in the JRAS, Volume 17, Issue 3, July 1885.
Major General William Cullen (17 May 1785–1 October 1862) was a British Army Officer with the Madras Artillery Regiment, and from 1840 to 1860, Resident in the Kingdom of Travancore and Cochin. During his stay in India, he took a scholarly interest in the region and contributed to journals on geology, plants and the culture of the region. He was instrumental in establishing the Napier Museum in Trivandrum. He died at Allepey in Kerala, where a road is named after him.
The Finnish Oriental Society (Finska Orientsällskapet) (SIS) was founded in December 1917 to promote research and knowledge of Oriental cultures in Finland. Originally focused on the Middle East, it has since expanded to include Asia and Africa as a whole.
Terence A. Phelps was an independent British researcher who became interested in the controversy concerning excavations in Northern India. He died in February 2018.
