Robert Eyles Egerton served as a British administrator in India after being educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and Haileybury. He began his career in India in 1849. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857 he served as Deputy Commissioner at Lahore. In 1869, he was appointed Commissioner of Nagpur and, in 1871, he was made Financial Commissioner of the Punjab. In 1879 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab. Egerton retired in 1882. There is a memorial to Egerton and his wife, Mary Warren, in the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection, Lahore.

Marie-Jean-Léon Lecoq, Baron d'Hervey de Juchereau, Marquis d'Hervey de Saint-Denys was a French sinologist also known for his research on dreams. In 1851 D'Hervey published his Recherches sur l'agriculture et l'horticulture des Chinois , in which considered plants and animals that might be able to acclimatize to Western countries. He translated Chinese texts and stories. He also published works concerning oneirology.

Satow Ernest Mason 1843-1929

Ernest Mason Satow was a British diplomat, scholar and Japanologist. Satow was influential in East Asia and Japan, particularly in Bakumatsu (1853–1867) and the Meiji-period (1868–1912). He also served in China after the Boxer Rebellion (1900–1906), in Thailand, Uruguay and Morocco, and represented Britain at the Second Hague Peace Conference in 1907. Satow was a linguist, a traveller, a writer of travel guidebooks, a dictionary compiler, a mountaineer, a keen botanist (chiefly with Frederick Dickins) and a major collector of Japanese books and manuscripts on all kinds of subjects. He authored A Diplomat in Japan and, in retirement, published A Guide to Diplomatic Practice .

Thomas Stamford Raffles

Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) was a British colonial official, who became Lieutenant Governor of Java after its capture from the Dutch in 1811. He is accredited with founding the port of Singapore, and wrote The History of Java.

Godfrey Phipps Baker

Godfrey Phipps Baker was a member of the 11th Native Infantry and later Captain of the 19th Native Industry. In 1812 he was asked by John Crawfurd to create maps and surveys of Java, which can be found in the second edition of Thomas S. Raffles' The History of Java.
