John Stevenson was born in Alton Campsie, Stirlingshire, on 3 November 1798 He trained as a minister becoming a missionary in India and an Indologist. After ordination in 1823 he was sent by the Scottish Missionary Society to their new Bombay Mission, and was a Missionary in Pune until appointed, in 1834, as Chaplain of the East India Company in Bombay, as Senior Chaplain in 1841, and Minister of St. Andrews. He resigned in 1854 and returned to Britain becoming Parish Minister of Ladykirk in Berwickshire from 1855-58.

Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, 1st Baronet, GCB FRS KLS (5 April 1810 – 5 March 1895) was a British East India Company army officer, politician and Orientalist, known for his decipherment of cuneiform inscriptions and therefore sometimes described as the Father of Assyriology.

Markham Kittoe was in India from 1825-53 as an Officer in Bengal 6th Native Infantry. He became Archaeological Enquirer to Government in the North Western Provinces.

George Buist was a Scottish journalist and scientist. He was the editor of The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce which his successor Robert Knight renamed The Times of India. Buist became unpaid inspector of the observatories of Bombay. Whilst in England, in 1845, he obtained special grants from the government for improving agricultural machines and rural economy in India, and for establishing 12 observatories for meteorological and tidal research. He also formed the geological collection for the museum of Elphinstone College, Bombay.

In 1846 Buist was appointed to the honorary position of sheriff of Bombay. In 1847 he planned, and in 1850 founded, the Bombay Reformatory School of Industry for the reformation and education of Indian children, of which he was superintendent, under the patronage of the governor, Lord Elphinstone.
