John Bagot Glubb was born in Preston, Lancashire, in 1897. He was educated at Cheltenham College before joining the Royal Engineers in 1915. He served on the Western Front in World War One and was transferred to Iraq in 1920. He became an officer of the Arab Legion in 1930, forming the Desert Patrol in 1931. In 1939 Glubb succeeded Frederick G. Peake as the commander of the Arab Legion remaining in charge of its command until 1956. Glubb died in 1986 at his home in Mayfield, East Sussex.

John Pinches Ltd was a London-based medallic business originally founded in the 1840s by Thomas Ryan Pinches and his younger brother John Pinches. In 1940, the company was registered as John Pinches (Medallists) Ltd. The company was sold to Franklin Mint of Philadelphia, USA, in 1969.

The Minutes of the Council Meeting may provide additional details of the award to Sir John Bagot Glubb. The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society 1941 (3), p. 294, it was reported that the Burton Medal had been given to Major John Glubb, as part of the Anniversary General Meeting Report.
